It’s always an exciting time when your baby is just getting their first set of teeth, but what does this mean and what do you need to be doing to protect them?

Your baby’s primary teeth will begin erupting around 6 months of age. Their first baby teeth are very important, and they will act as the markers for their permanent teeth later (also known as “secondary teeth”). In the coming years, your child’s baby teeth will be used as a learning platform for you to teach them all about the importance of dental hygiene.

Your child’s baby teeth will also bring them the first visit from the tooth fairy and take them to the dental office for regular checkups. But what does caring for baby teeth entail?

Just like with their permanent teeth that will arrive later, your baby’s first teeth need to be brushed and cleaned regularly. Keeping your child’s first teeth in healthy condition is essential to a healthy smile later in life. This is because their initial dental habits and the health of their first teeth will directly impact their gum health. Healthy gums now will lead to stronger, healthier teeth later on–and that’s vital to your baby’s overall health development.

During the first few years of your child’s life, you’ll be responsible for caring for their baby teeth, but as they get older and become more independent and capable, you should use this as an opportunity to teach them about the importance of brushing and flossing early on.

Our friendly staff would be happy to schedule an appointment for you and your baby to come to the dentist for your first appointment. While you’re here, feel free to ask any questions you may have about your baby’s first teeth. Our dentists will ensure that you have all the information you need to support their healthy smile before you leave.
